With attention across the athletics world still focused on the recently concluded World Club Championships, Britain's domestic season got underway on Wednesday 6th May with the Season 106 Club Regional Championships.

While the international spotlight had fallen elsewhere earlier in the day, clubs from across Great Britain were busy fighting for one of twenty-five qualification places for the Club National Championships, producing a standard of competition that suggested the domestic season could be every bit as compelling as the global stage.

By the time the final scores were calculated, Quemerford Harriers had emerged as regional champions with a commanding 45,992 points, leading a strong field headed by Bumble Bees AC, Catalytical AC, Weymouth Bay Sharks and Pineapple AC.

Across a day that delivered everything from bright Welsh sunshine to testing rain in the east, clubs were presented with vastly different conditions as they attempted to launch their domestic campaigns in style. Some rose magnificently to the challenge, while others relied on grit and determination to secure one of the coveted qualification places.

Twenty-five clubs ultimately earned their places at the Club National Championships, while Hacksaws secured qualification through their participation in the World Club Championships.

Quemerford Harriers Set The Early Benchmark

Competing beneath grey South West skies, Quemerford Harriers delivered the most complete performance of the championships.

Sarah Roxburgh's superb 4:26.71 victory in the women's 1500 metres generated one of the highest middle-distance scores recorded anywhere in Britain. Zachary Shrubb controlled the men's 20km walk in 1:41:16.91, while Daniel Gilbride's outstanding 64.97-metre discus throw added crucial field-event points.

Their combination of endurance strength, technical quality and scoring depth made them deserved regional champions and immediately established them as one of the teams everyone else will be chasing.

Bumble Bees AC Make An Immediate Statement

Cool but dry conditions greeted competitors in North Wales, where Bumble Bees AC opened their domestic campaign in impressive fashion.

Spencer Easton produced one of the standout middle-distance performances of the day with 4:02.93 in the men's 1500 metres. Tilly McWilliam excelled in the women's 20km walk with 1:53:32.87, while Demi Boyle dominated the women's steeplechase in 14:57.36.

Second place overall confirmed that the Bees have the quality required to challenge any club in Britain this season.

Catalytical AC Shine Through The Rain

Rain swept across the East of England competition, but Catalytical AC turned difficult conditions into a memorable performance.

Phoebe Hinchcliffe produced the outstanding throwing display of the championships, launching the discus to a magnificent 66.30 metres. Duncan Macrae's 24.10 in the men's 200 metres provided valuable sprint points, while Omiros Zarnas impressed in the men's 20km walk with 1:42:52.75.

Third place represented an excellent return and demonstrated the club's ability to score heavily across multiple disciplines.

Weymouth Bay Sharks Announce Their Intentions

Weymouth Bay Sharks emerged from the opening domestic competition of Season 106 with considerable credit after securing fourth place overall.

Tiina Rumma delivered the highest-scoring sprint or hurdle performance of the entire championships with an outstanding 1:05.48 in the women's 400m hurdles. Bastien Gabriel added another major score with 1:01.38 in the men's event, while Kate Severin's 37:21.59 in the women's 10,000 metres showcased the club's endurance capabilities.

The Sharks left the championships looking every bit capable of competing with the country's established powers.

Pineapple AC Flourish In South Wales

South Wales enjoyed some of the best weather conditions of the day and Pineapple AC made full use of the sunshine.

Samuel Boyle led the scoring with an excellent 1:02.72 in the men's 400m hurdles. Adam Mudge produced another polished performance over 1500 metres, winning in 4:11.48, while Melissa Wood topped the women's high jump competition with a clearance of 1.65 metres.

Their fifth-place finish was built upon contributions from every corner of the team, providing an ideal platform for the remainder of the domestic season.
